UNCOMMEN: Dads 2 – Day 4

Happy to have found another devotional by UNCOMMEN that will last 2 more days. This is a sequel to the first UNCOMMEN Dad’s devotional and will look to challenge us to be better dads, better Christians, and better men! This devotional will do so by tackling subjects like effort, trust, consistency, and more. I am excited to see Jesus in and through this devotional and how He can and will infuse us with life-changing power to make us become UNCOMMEN Dads!

Let’s check out our scriptures for today’s devotional:

• Proverbs 13:24

‘Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them. ‘

Proverbs 13:24

God’s Word isn’t just to teach kids but all of us! God’s Word is active and alive! God’s Word is sharp and can cut right through the situation to get right to the core of things! Let’s make sure to spend time in God’s Word and be filled with wisdom and discernment needed for today!

Let’s be the dads who use discipline to teach our kids life lessons! Let’s be the dads who don’t take God’s Word out of context but rather make sure to take God’s Word “in its correct, biblical context, it is understood as an important strategy in equipping parents in the teaching, training, and disciplining of children within their family.” Let’s be the dads who take the word “rod” in proper context as a shepherd would “his rod was never used to harm the sheep.” Let’s be the dads who don’t twist God’s Word because we know that the “rod” spoken of in today’s verse aligns with how the shepherd would use his rod and “It was more often an instrument for guidance or comfort.” Let’s consider how David spoke of God’s rod and staff in Psalm 23 when he said “Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.” Let’s be the dads who when “Interpreting Scripture should always be carried out grammatically and in a correct, historical context.” Let’s be the dads who take time to study even one verse to make sure we understand it and find study references to help us dig deeper like:

Takeaways from Today’s Devotional:
“Be Consistent With Your Discipline“

• Where are you at in the raising of your kids?
• Do you remember how you were raised and the things you liked and those you didn’t?
• Do you remember how some of the ones you didn’t like impacted you for good?
• Do you remember how some of the ones you liked impacted you negatively?
• Let’s be the dads who use God’s Word to help us be the dads He created and purposed for us to be!
• Let’s be the dads who speak to our kids about right and wrong!
• Let’s be the dads who provide healthy boundaries to live within!
• Let’s be the dads who help our kids understand how to live based on right and wrong and why living within healthy boundaries is for their benefit!
• Let’s be the dads who are ready to have the hard conversations if and when needed with our kids!
• Let’s be the dads who take the time to have conversations with our kids so that there aren’t surprises or trauma because of a gap!
• Let’s be the dads who aren’t interested in shouting matches or verbal abuse!
• Let’s be the dads who are more interested in acting and speaking out of love!
• Let’s be the dads who are willing to press pause, take a break, and wait a moment for tempers and emotions to calm down in order to be able to come together and have a logical conversation about the situation!
• Let’s be the dads who respond or discipline out of love rather than malice or anger!
• Let’s be the dads who are consistent in how we respond so that our kids understand the expectations!
• Let’s be the dads who are consistent in how we discipline in order to build trust and appreciation with our kids!
• Let’s be the dads who are consistent and that the discipline is appropriately weighted for the situation or action that has taken place!
• Let’s be the dads who in so doing set our kids up for success because they are able to understand instruction!
• Today’s devotional uses speed limit signs to give an example of consistent discipline and how it impacts behavior:
  • “Speed limit signs are an excellent example of being consistent and something you grow to depend on while driving. You get on the interstate, and you look for the speed limit to determine how fast you should drive. You know it’s fast, but you know there is a speed limit. But when you get off the interstate onto a road that you know has a slower rate of speed, you look for the sign to let you know what that is. It’s a rule; it has consequences, and it’s consistent.“

  • “Are you consistent in your discipline? Or are you a loose cannon with a short fuse?“
  • “Do you hold yourself to the same discipline as your children?“

  • “I challenge you to examine your discipline style. Instruct them instead of simply making them fear you. Boundaries are good. It makes them feel safe, and it shows them you care for them.“
