Transformative Words: How to Use Your Language for Good

Transformative Words How to Use Your Language for Good

As we begin today we will face many opportunities to say words. We are faced with the decision of which words to use and their impact on the people around us. Words are transformative as they have the power to build up and tear down. We get the choice to use our language for good by speaking blessings rather than curses over people. How will you decide to speak into the people who come into your life today?

Consider what God’s Word has to say about the power of transformative words:

  • James 3:5-6: “The tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.”
  • Proverbs 18:21: “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
  • Ephesians 4:29: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
  • Proverbs 15:4: “The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.”
  • Proverbs 16:24: “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.”
  • Matthew 12:36-37: “But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Consider what the Bible has to say about using our words for good:

  • Ephesians 4:29: “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.”
  • Proverbs 15:1: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
  • Proverbs 16:24: “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.”
  • Proverbs 18:21: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
  • Colossians 4:6: “Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.”
  • James 1:19: “This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger.”
