A new week is beginning and we finished the last devotional yesterday and so I did my regular search for “dads” in the plans on the YouVersion Bible site. This one jumped out as I was going through the pages of options and so here we go. In the description of the devotional, it says:
Life demands we make critical choices, but how can you do so effectively? Your ability to discern can make all the difference in what your future looks like. As you read, you will discover how to measure what you are taught against the truth of God’s Word, how to develop a life-giving connection with God, and the path to finding clear direction from the Holy Spirit.

Scripture from Today’s Devotional:
God’s Word is powerful and alive! God’s Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path! Let’s make sure to receive what God has to say and put it into practice!
Let’s be the dads who speak by the Spirit and do not curse Jesus! Let’s be the dads who speak by the Spirit and say Jesus is Lord! Let’s be the dads who realize that the Spirit provides gifts and prepare ourselves to be able to be used by God and receive His gifts! Let’s be the dads who choose to serve in order to serve God! Let’s be the dads who receive the gifts of the Spirit in order to be able to use them for the benefit of others! Let’s be the dads who reflect on the gifts of the Spirit like:
- the ability to give wise advice
- a message of special knowledge
- great faith
- healing
- the power to perform miracles
- the ability to prophesy
- discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit
- the ability to speak in unknown languages
- the ability to interpret what is being said
Let’s be the dads who realize that these gifts come from the Holy Spirit and that He alone decides which gift each person should have! Let’s be the dads who are teaching others about Jesus! Let’s be the dads who are training others in the ways of God! Let’s be the dads who remember the basics and can help others come up to speed! Let’s be the dads who know how to do what is right! Let’s be the dads who are mature and trained with the skills of being able to recognize the difference between right and wrong!
Let’s be the dads who choose to fully obey the Lord your God and carefully keep all his commands! Let’s be the dads who get to experience the blessings of God! Let’s be the dads whose towns and fields are blessed! Let’s be the dads whose children and crops are blessed! Let’s be the dads who wherever we go and whatever we do, will be blessed! Let’s be the dads who listen to the commands of the Lord your God! Let’s be the dads who are careful to obey God’s commands! Let’s be the dads who don’t turn away from God’s commands! Let’s be the dads who choose to obey God’s commands rather than deal with the consequences of curses instead of blessings!

Takeaways from Today’s Devotional:
“What is Discernment?“
- Let’s be the dads who realize that “discernment is a spiritual gift“!
- Let’s be the dads who realize that “God provides every Christian with spiritual gifts; however, not everyone uses them“!
- Today’s devotional helps us understand what discernment is when it says:
- Today’s devotional shared their definition of discernment as “spirit-infused decision making“!
- Today’s devotional shares how C.H. Spurgeon defines discernment as “knowing the difference between right and almost right.“!
- Let’s be the dads who realize that “sometimes, discernment goes beyond our thoughts, feelings, opinions, and faith into the very will of God for our lives“!
- Let’s be the dads who realize we aren’t perfect and so we choose to try and “make better decisions based on the information we have and through the prompting of God’s Spirit in us“!
- Today’s devotional closes with this thought and challenge:
- “Higher-level discernment is sometimes the difference between a blessing and a curse. The Israelites in Deuteronomy 28 were given many blessings for obedience to the law and curses for disobedience. Decisions that we make poorly and without discernment can easily lead to a lifetime of negative consequences.“
- “As we continue on this journey of identifying areas of discernment, ask yourself, “what areas in the past have I had good and poor discernment in?”“
