SESSION 19: Grab the Rope

Series: Becoming

Spirit-led Dads Who Stop Striving and Start Surrendering

Sermon: “Grab the Rope” (Pastor Josh)

YouTube Reference: Grab the Rope

🎯 SESSION BIG IDEA – Be Spirit-led

What if we chose to be Spirit-led? Every dad knows what it feels like to be caught in a current — expectations, temptations, pressures, fears, habits, and patterns that keep pulling us in the wrong direction. Most of us respond the same way: we paddle harder. We try to fix ourselves. We try to muscle our way back to shore.

But Romans 8 — and Pastor Josh’s message — remind us of something deeper: You were never designed to escape these currents in your own strength. The Spirit of God is the One who rescues, empowers, redirects, and leads.

This session invites dads to stop striving, stop self‑leading, and grab the rope — the Spirit‑led life.

✝️ KEY SCRIPTURE

Romans 8:1 (NLT) “So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”

Romans 8:5–6 (NLT) “Letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.”

Romans 8:12–14 (NLT) “You have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do… For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.”

Romans 8:15–16 (NLT) “You received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children… His Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.”

🧊 ICEBREAKER / WELCOME (10 Minutes)

Keep it light. Get guys talking. Build connection before depth.

  1. Have you ever been caught in a literal current — ocean, river, lake — and realized you were in trouble? What happened?
  2. What’s one habit or pattern you’ve tried to “paddle” your way out of? (Keep it light — humor is welcome.)
  3. If your mind had a “default setting,” what would it be right now — peace, stress, distraction, worry, or something else?

🎙 SERMON CONTEXT (Leader Summary — Read or Paraphrase)

Pastor Josh opened with a story from his teenage years — boogie boarding in Southern California, drifting into a rip current, and paddling with everything he had… only to go nowhere. The harder he paddled, the more exhausted he became. Eventually a lifeguard on a jet ski pulled up, threw him a rope, and towed him back to shore.

That moment became the metaphor for Romans 8.

“You can paddle as hard as you want, but you’re just going to keep finding yourself in the same cycles of life.” (Transcript)

Romans 8 teaches that the Christian life is not about self‑effort, self‑improvement, or self‑rescue. It’s about surrendering to the Spirit — letting Him lead your mind, empower your will, and shape your identity.

Pastor Josh made three big points:

  1. Let the Spirit lead your mind. Your thoughts are the battlefield. Fleshly thinking leads to death; Spirit‑led thinking leads to life and peace.
  2. Let the Spirit empower your will. You are no longer a slave to sin. Every “yes” to the flesh is a choice — and the Spirit gives you the power to say “no.”
  3. Let the Spirit shape your identity. Culture tells you to find identity in success, performance, income, reputation, or fatherhood. But the Spirit whispers a deeper truth: “You are God’s son.”

The sermon ended with this challenge: Stop paddling. Grab the rope. Let the Spirit lead.

🔑 KEY POINTS

Point 1 — Let the Spirit Lead Your Mind

Romans 8:5–6

Pastor Josh emphasized that Paul doesn’t start with behavior — he starts with the mind.

“Before you act, you think… and if you don’t take control of your thoughts, you will drift.” (Transcript)

Fleshly thoughts puff you up or tear you down. Spirit‑led thoughts bring life and peace.

Dad Application

Your mind sets the tone of your home. If your thoughts are anxious, angry, distracted, or self‑condemning, your family feels it. If your thoughts are Spirit‑led, your home feels peace.

Ask: What thoughts have been steering my life lately — flesh or Spirit?

Point 2 — Let the Spirit Empower Your Will

Romans 8:12–13

“You have no obligation to say yes to your flesh.” (Transcript)

This was the sermon’s uncomfortable moment — but a necessary one. If Jesus set you free, then every time you choose sin, it’s not slavery — it’s choice.

But the Spirit gives you power to say no to:

  • addiction
  • pornography
  • anger
  • pride
  • materialism
  • numbing behaviors
  • apathy
  • slothfulness
  • self‑led living

Dad Application

Your kids don’t need a perfect dad — they need a dad who knows how to say no to the flesh and yes to the Spirit. Your “no” today becomes their “yes” tomorrow.

Point 3 — Let the Spirit Shape Your Identity

Romans 8:14–17

Culture offers identity based on:

  • job
  • income
  • success
  • reputation
  • performance
  • parenting
  • accomplishments

But all of these exhaust you.

“Everything culture wants your identity rooted in is designed to keep you stuck.” (Transcript)

The Spirit whispers: “You are My son.”

Dad Application

Your kids don’t need a high‑performing dad — they need a secure dad. A dad who knows who he is. A dad who lives from identity, not for identity.

💬 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS (20–25 Minutes)

Opening the Text

  1. Read Romans 8:1. What does “no condemnation” practically mean for a dad who feels like he keeps failing?
  2. Romans 8:6 says the Spirit brings “life and peace.” Where do you feel the opposite of peace right now?
  3. Pastor Josh said the mind is the starting point. What thought patterns tend to pull you into the wrong current?

Dad Life Discussion

  1. Where have you been “paddling” in your own strength — trying to fix yourself instead of surrendering?
  2. What’s one habit, addiction, or pattern where you need the Spirit’s power to say “no”?
  3. Identity check: If your kids described what defines you, what would they say right now?
  4. Where do you sense the Spirit whispering, “Grab the rope — let Me lead here”?

Extra Discussion Questions

  1. Surrender vs. Striving (1:13:53 – 1:14:14): Pastor Josh talks about the difference between trying to “paddle” through life in our own strength versus “grabbing the rope” and letting the Spirit lead. In your role as a dad, where are you most tempted to “paddle” on your own instead of surrendering to God’s guidance?
  2. The Battle for the Mind (1:05:00 – 1:09:22): We heard that our thoughts often drift toward pride or discouragement based on the “currents of the flesh.” As a father, what are some of the most common negative thoughts or “fleshly currents” you battle during the week? How can we better hold each other accountable to replacing those thoughts with truth (1:11:00)?
  3. Empowering the Will (1:14:16 – 1:20:25): The message states that we have no obligation to follow the dictates of our sinful nature (1:14:50). What are some practical ways we can use our group to support one another in saying “no” to temptations or habits that keep us from being the men and fathers God created us to be?
  4. Identity and Acceptance (1:23:03 – 1:27:00): Culture tells us our identity is found in our career, our bank account, or how “successful” our kids are. How does knowing that you are fully “accepted” by God as his child change the way you approach your work, your parenting, and your rest?
  5. The “Spirit-Led” Home (1:28:22 – 1:28:57): If we were to truly “grab the rope” and let the Spirit lead our families, what would look different in our homes this coming week? What is one specific area where you want to invite the Holy Spirit to take the lead in your life as a dad?

🎯 DAD CHALLENGE OF THE WEEK

The Rope Moment

At some point this week, when you feel overwhelmed, tempted, stressed, or stuck, stop and pray:

“Holy Spirit, I’m done paddling. I’m grabbing the rope.”

Then take one small Spirit‑led action:

  • confess
  • apologize
  • pause
  • pray
  • walk away
  • choose peace
  • choose patience
  • choose truth

Tell your kids (age‑appropriate): “Dad’s learning to let God lead him this week.”

Let them see the shift.

🙏 CLOSING PRAYER

Father, thank You for giving us Your Spirit — our Helper, our Guide, our Strength. We confess that we’ve been paddling in our own power for far too long. Teach us to surrender. Lead our minds into life and peace. Empower our wills to say no to the flesh. Shape our identity as sons who are deeply loved. Make us dads who grab the rope and live Spirit‑led lives that bless our families. In Jesus’ name — Amen.
