Faith is not activity.
Faith is not attendance.
Faith is not routine.

Faith is movement.

In Epistle to the Hebrews 11, we are reminded:

“And without faith it is impossible to please God…” (Hebrews 11:6)

Some dads are spiritually busy… but not spiritually moving.

This session challenges us to examine whether we are growing in faith — or simply running in place.

Opening Discussion

  1. What was one highlight from your week as a dad?
  2. What was one challenge from your week?
  3. What stood out to you from the sermon?
  4. How would you currently define “faith” in your own life?

Sermon Takeaways

Hebrews 11 shows us three movements of faith:

  • Stepping Out — Obedience
  • Stepping Down — Surrender
  • Stepping Up — Responsibility

Biblical faith always moves a man somewhere.

1️⃣ Stepping Out — Movement Toward Obedience

Examples from Hebrews 11:

  • Abraham left what was familiar.
  • Moses obeyed despite insecurity.
  • Joshua trusted God over military strategy.

You cannot follow Jesus and stay in the same place.

Discussion Questions:

Where have you become complacent in your spiritual walk?

Starter answers:

  • “I attend church but don’t open my Bible during the week.”
  • “I pray over meals but not intentionally with my wife.”
  • “I’ve stopped pursuing growth — I’m maintaining.”
  • “I avoid confronting sin patterns.”
  • “I let busyness excuse spiritual neglect.”

Dig deeper:

  • What fear is underneath that complacency?
  • What would it cost your family if nothing changes?

What is one step of obedience you feel God calling you to take this week?

Starter answers:

  • “Pray out loud with my wife.”
  • “Lead a short devotional with my kids.”
  • “Reach out for accountability.”
  • “Confess something I’ve been hiding.”
  • “Apologize to my child.”

Dig deeper:

  • Why have you delayed this step?
  • Put a specific day and time on it.

2️⃣ Stepping Down — Movement Toward Surrender

Faith requires humility.

When Abraham was asked to lay Isaac on the altar (Genesis 22), God tested his identity.

You cannot be full of faith if you are full of self.

Discussion Questions:

What gives you your sense of identity?

Starter answers:

  • “My job performance.”
  • “Being the provider.”
  • “My kids’ success.”
  • “Recognition.”
  • “Control.”
  • “Being needed.”

Dig deeper:

  • If that were taken away, how shaken would you be?
  • Do you react more emotionally to career setbacks than spiritual drift?

How can you intentionally shift that identity onto Christ this week?

Starter answers:

  • “Start my day with Scripture before email.”
  • “Pray: ‘My worth is in Christ, not my work.’”
  • “Confess pride quickly.”
  • “Reduce obsession with performance metrics.”
  • “Ask God daily who I am in Him.”

Dig deeper:

  • What habit reinforces your false identity?
  • What habit could reinforce your identity in Christ instead?

3️⃣ Stepping Up — Movement Toward Responsibility

Faith is not passive.

Examples from Hebrews 11:

  • Noah built the ark.
  • Isaac and Jacob passed on blessing.
  • Moses’ parents protected him.

They did not say, “That’s not my job.”

Discussion Questions:

What responsibilities in your family or community have you resisted?

Starter answers:

  • “Leading spiritually at home.”
  • “Initiating prayer.”
  • “Avoiding hard conversations.”
  • “Being emotionally present.”
  • “Serving consistently.”
  • “Mentoring another man.”
  • “Sharing my faith.”

Dig deeper:

  • Is your resistance rooted in fear or laziness?
  • What example are you setting for your children?

What is one action step you can take this week to lead with faith?

Starter answers:

  • “Schedule family prayer time.”
  • “Lay hands on my kids and bless them.”
  • “Invite another family over for faith conversation.”
  • “Volunteer to serve.”
  • “Write down a spiritual vision for my home.”
  • “Have a one-on-one intentional conversation with each child.”

Dig deeper:

  • Set a specific day and time.
  • Tell another dad so you follow through.

Practical Applications for the Week

  • Step Out: Initiate one spiritually uncomfortable action.
  • Step Down: Identify and surrender one identity idol.
  • Step Up: Lead one intentional spiritual moment at home.

Closing Prayer

Father,

Forgive us for treadmill faith — motion without movement.
Give us courage to step out.
Give us humility to step down.
Give us conviction to step up.

Make us men who move.
Make us fathers who lead.
Make us husbands who reflect Christ.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
