Session 24 – The Mirror in the Manger (Truth & Grace)

Five diverse dads of varying ages and ethnicities sit around a wooden table in a cozy, warmly lit living-room-style space. They are engaged in candid Bible study and conversation, with open Bibles, notebooks, and coffee mugs in front of them. No one looks at the camera; the scene conveys trust, connection, and spiritual reflection. Title overlay reads โ€œThe Mirror in the Mangerโ€ with subtitle โ€œGood News. Great Joy. All People.โ€

When we look in the mirror it reveals the truth so that we can adjust or change things to make sure we are ready. To help dads understand that the Christmas message is not just encouragingโ€”it is transforming. When we look into the manger, Jesus reveals both Godโ€™s grace and Godโ€™s truth, calling every dad to receive salvation and walk in ongoing transformation that impacts his family.

Opening Prayer (Leader)

โ€œGod, thank You for sending Jesus as our Savior. As we open Your Word, help us see You clearly and see ourselves honestly. Give us humble hearts that are ready to receive, repent, and grow. In Jesusโ€™ name, amen.โ€

Icebreaker: โ€œWhat the Mirror Revealsโ€

Time: 5โ€“7 minutes
Purpose: To lower defenses, create laughter, and naturally introduce the idea of reflection and honesty without forcing vulnerability too quickly.

Instructions

Ask each dad to answer one of the following (their choice):

  1. Light Option:
โ€œWhat is one thing you always check in the mirror before leaving the houseโ€”and why?โ€
  2. Transition Option:
โ€œWhat is something about getting older or being a dad that has surprised you the most?โ€
  3. Bridge to the Topic:
โ€œIf your life had a โ€˜mirror momentโ€™ this past yearโ€”something that showed you needed to growโ€”what was it?โ€

Core Scripture

Luke 2:8โ€“20

Key Observation

The angel declares good news of great joy for all people. The message is delivered to shepherdsโ€”ordinary menโ€”showing that the gospel is accessible, personal, and transformative.

Big Idea for Dads

When we look into the manger, we see a mirror.
Jesus reveals who God truly isโ€”and who we truly are. That truth is what makes the good news powerful enough to change our lives and our families.

Discussion Section 1

Good News for All People Because All People Need It

Scripture

Key Truth
A Savior is only good news if we admit we need saving. Jesus came full of grace and truthโ€”grace to forgive us, truth to confront what is broken in us.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why is it difficult for menโ€”especially dadsโ€”to admit weakness or sin?
  2. In what ways can self-reliance prevent us from fully trusting Jesus as Savior?
  3. How does understanding our need for grace shape how we lead our families?

Leader Insight / Sample Direction
Many dads try to lead from performance instead of surrender. The gospel begins when we stop pretending we are fine and admit we need Jesus daily.

Practical Application

  • Take time this week to ask God to reveal areas you may be minimizing or avoiding.
  • Model humility for your kids by acknowledging mistakes and seeking forgiveness.

Discussion Section 2

Good News for All People Because All People Can Receive It

Scripture

Key Truth
Salvation is freely available to everyoneโ€”but it must be personally received. Grace is a gift, not an assumption.

Discussion Questions

  1. What does it mean to personally โ€œreceiveโ€ Jesus rather than just know about Him?
  2. What obstacles commonly keep men from fully surrendering to Christ?
  3. How can dads ensure their faith is authentic, not just inherited or habitual?

Leader Insight / Sample Direction
Church attendance and moral behavior do not replace a surrendered heart. Faith becomes real when we personally respond to Jesus.

Practical Application

  • If you have never clearly received Christ, today can be your moment.
  • If you have, write out or share your salvation story with your kids or another dad this week.

Discussion Section 3

Good News for All People Because All People Can Change

Scripture

Key Truth
Salvation is a moment, but transformation is a journey. Jesus saves us out of sin and walks with us into a new way of life.

Discussion Questions

  1. Where have you seen God change you since following Jesus?
  2. What areas of your life still need steadying and growth?
  3. How does understanding sanctification help you extend grace to yourself and others?

Leader Insight / Sample Direction
God is not finished with any of us. Real masculinity in Christ includes patience, obedience, and daily surrender.

Practical Application

  • Identify one habit or attitude Jesus is asking you to surrender.
  • Commit to a daily rhythm (Scripture, prayer, accountability) that helps steady your walk.

Closing Reflection for Dads

This Christmas, slow down long enough to look honestly into the mirror of the manger. Jesus meets you exactly where you areโ€”but loves you too much to leave you there.

Closing Prayer (Leader)

โ€œJesus, thank You for rescuing us and walking with us. Help us lead our families from a place of grace, truth, and humility. Shape us into the dads Youโ€™ve called us to be. Amen.โ€
